Prof. Weerasinghe, Prof. Emeritus, (Univ Ruhuna), and Vice Rector, International Tertiary Education Asia campus (INTECAsia), has more than 35 years of academic experiences with excellent international exposure to high calibre research. Currently he serves as a consultant to Cinnamon Research program (Ministry of Primary Industries,and NSF,) Agriculturist to Colombo Flood modelling project, and consultant to EU project Advancing skill Creation to enhance transformation(ASCENT).
He is an Engineer Agronomist, holding a first class Diploma and M.Sc (Hon) degree (1975) and Ph.D (1980) in Agriculture, from Friendship University Moscow. He was the first Agric. Officer in Hatton National bank (1975). During 1981-2014 he was a senior academic in faculty of Agriculture University of Ruhuna and held number of Admin positions. He was instrumental to create Department of Agricultural Engineering being the founder Chair professor and Head of the Department since 1993. He was elected as the Dean of the faculty of Agriculture for two full terms (2001 - 2007). He also worked as a Director De Research in ORSTOM, Montpellier France, (1988-90), Advanced Research fellow in Durham University UK, (2009), Consultant, for Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) Bangkok, Thailand (2012- to date), Consultant for the World Bank Project, on Higher education for twenty First century (HETC) (2012) and consultant in Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute (2010-2012) during his sabbatical terms.
Prof. Weerasinghe is an internationally well renowned scientist in the areas of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Resilience building and Ecosystems based adaptation (EBA), He has the expertise training on Application of Nuclear techniques in Agriculture from International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA , Viena), Agric. Climatology from leading climate research Institutions Univ. of East Anglia , UK, ICRISAT (INDIA), and IRAT, CIRAD (Montpellier France), Agric. Research Management, from National Academy of Agric. Research Management (NAARM),India, Innovation led sustainable development (VINNOVA, Sweden). Emergency drinking water treatment methods (Univ. of Karlsruhe Germany). He is a pioneer researcher who undertook cinnamon technology mechanization program in Sri Lanka for which he was awarded the Ashoka fellow (US) in social entrepreneurship in 2010.
During his carrier of 35 years, Prof. Weeerasinghe represented number of national governing bodies. He was the founder member and Chairman of the Ruhuna Business Incubator Company,(RBI), in 2004; Board, member in the Water Resources development Authority, Sri Lanka,(2007-2009) Served in National Subcommittee on Agriculture and Food Technology in National Science Foundation (NSF) (2006-2008), A Member of governing council of Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technical Education (SLIAT), a Member of the consultative committee of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), board member of Management, in Post Graduate Institute of Agriculture, (PGIA) University of Peradeniya, board, member of the Faculty of Engineering Technology, Open University of Sri Lanka. During 1990-2000,Prof. Weerasinghe took the task to revise the GCE (Ordinary Level) and (Advance Level) syllabuses, B.Ed degree course in Agriculture and preparation of course manuals for NIE and served as a Examiner in Agric. Sciences in Dept. of Examination. He was a Senior Consultant, to Southern Development Authority, Council member, Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) (1997-98 and 2003-2004) President, Federation of University teachers Association (FUTA) (1998-99) (General President, Agricultural Engineering Society of Sri Lanka 2000-2001). During 2000 - 2008 he was the joint editor of the International Journal on Tropical Agriculture and Extension, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna. He also served in the Director Board of the Lucky Lanka Dairy company.
Prof. Weerasinghe has international work experience in many countries in Asia, and Europe. He has published more than 100 international journal papers and more than 200 Conference papers. Prof. Weerasinghe was intensively Engaged with community restoration and resilience building programs, after 2004 Tsunami, coordinating CIDA (Canada), German Corporation, NSF (US), World Bank, AusAID and ADPC, programs in disaster resilience and response management. He has Worked actively in indigenous technology development for unprivileged sectors by initiating and coordinating Number of international projects (GTZ (Germany), ViINNOVA, (Sweden), UNIDO (Vienna), World Bank) and national agencies (Dept. of Minor Export crops, NSF, Cinnamon grower associations, Spice association of Sri Lanka ect.). He Work with Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) since 2010 as a consultant in Climate Change and Resource management program and engage in flood mitigation and coastal ecosystems restoration programs to meet the challenges in Climate challenges in coastal ecosystems of Vietnam and Sri Lanka. He is a leading scientist engage with restoration of paddy ecosystems degraded in Nilwala Flood protection scheme.
Prof. Weerasinghe is a winner of many national and international awards including National award for Disaster resilience 2014, Gold medals at world cup of Computer implemented inventions Taipei 2007, Suzhou, China, (2008), UGC award for excellence in attracting funds for research in (2004), Vice Chancellors awards of the Ruhuna University for the most outstanding promoter of the international relations (2004), most outstanding inventor innovator (2005), Highest recipient of Research grants 2005, and most outstanding Senior Scholar 2006. Currently he engages with number of prestigious International research programs with ADPC (Bangkok), European community (EU), Global Disaster preparedness center (R2R program) by linking many national and international Institutions.
